The ruins of the Lazaretto are in Isla de Cabras, a Puerto Rico municipality of Toa Baja. The Lazaretto was a former quarantine hospital built in the 19th century to isolate people suffering from contagious diseases like leprosy and yellow fever. They housed the victims of yellow fever, cholera, and leprosy victims, among other conditions. Since these diseases did not cure the victim, admittance was a death sentence.
In 1876, the construction began on four buildings serving as a shelter and hospital for the diseased. The brick structures were finished by 1883 and were known as the Lazaretto de Isla de Cabras.

The facility remained operational even after the United States seized control of Puerto Rico in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. The Toa Baja Lazaretto Hospital has operated for several decades. According to the 1910 census, 35 people lived on the islet then. In 1923, the government closed the hospital due to its inhumane conditions. Afterward, authorities established an asylum on the main island in Trujillo Alto, catering to leprosy patients and relocating the colony’s residents there. Despite this, the islet’s original structure remains untouched. Nevertheless, the islet’s original design remains intact.
Isla de Cabras was used for various purposes until authorities transformed it into the recreational getaway known today.
